Become a preceptor with NPHub: What are the benefits?

Why should you become a preceptor with NPHub?

Let’s start at the beginning.

We love our preceptors, but lately, we realize we might have made a small mistake. Our blog is filled with resources for NP students, but there are close to no post for preceptors. It’s time to change that!

We created this huge guide, which will be constantly updated, to tell you everything you need to know if you’re considering to become a preceptor with NPHub, or even if you haven’t considered it yet. Here’s what makes us different.

Compensation (the issue of payment)

Should preceptors be paid? This is the number one issue in the community.

We believe preceptors, especifically NP preceptors, are some of the most underappreciated, overworked, clinical populations.

When it comes to NPHub, and other similar companies, part of the issue is solved by issuing compensation in the form of an honorarium.

If you are unclear about what this means, you should read up on the definition of an honorarium, which is basically money given to people as a sort of gift, or thank-you note, and not as a salary or fee.

It’s important to make this distinction because the main argument against preceptor compensation is this:

“Giving preceptors money for their services amounts to commercializing the job of a preceptor, introducing economics to a place where healthcare and education is all that should matter.”

For a lot of people, this offering of value in the form of money ironically devalues the profession as a whole.

What we want you to consider as a potential NPHub preceptor

Teachers all around the US get paid. Preceptors for MDs and PAs sometimes get paid as well, also in the form of honorariums, in most cases.

So, why are we talking about this? Well, we mention it because the fact that you’ll be receiving money might keep you from looking at our other benefits, from seeing the bigger picture.

We just want to present you with the other side of the argument.

Some preceptors just don’t like getting paid for precepting. We understand that 100%.

However, honorariums are just another way for us to show our appreciation for what you do. As simple as that.

We should also mention the fact that preceptors are already doing this job, and will continue to do so, without money being their primary motivator.

We try to keep honorariums competitive, but you’ll find that this is not why preceptors choose to work with us anyway.

This issue is being largely exaggerated.

We could run the whole operation without compensation, but that’s just not who we are.

Don’t like to get paid for precepting? You can always donate the money, use it to help your students, etcetera. And we all will love you for it.

If you have a similar or different opinion about this, you can always let us know. We always appreciate your insight.

Compensation (How it works)

Now we’ll give you some details on how compensation actually works within NPHub.

Neither we nor our competitors disclose how much money you’ll be getting as a preceptor. Again, because that’s just not important.

What you should know is that our payment process might be a lot better in many ways when compared to other preceptor matching services.

For example, we structure honorariums by the number of students you take, and the number of hours you teach.

You take your first student for a certain number of hours, and we calculate your honorarium based on that. You take more students, you teach more hours, and each time you’ll be getting a different check.

Other companies might just issue a single honorarium monthly or every two weeks.

Whether this is more agreeable to you as a preceptor or not, that’s your decision. We believe that having a more comprehensive and detailed system in place yields a larger benefit.

Compensation methods

You’ll receive your honorariums within six weeks of the student starting their rotation with you.

So far, our primary method is the good ol’ check, which is reliable but brings into question the issue of time.

This is why we also have the option of issuing direct deposits, which is something that other preceptor matching services might not offer you.

These deposits are not an automatic option at this point. This might change in the future depending on what preceptors like you feel would be the best way to receive compensation.

In the meantime, when you sign up, or when someone from NPHub approaches you, you can just make it clear that you would like to receive direct deposits to your account.

We’ve made it pretty easy to set up.

Referrals and bonuses

Another way you can help students succeed is by helping us with referrals.

We’ll give you a referral code that you can share with your colleagues, and you can get $100 to $150 for every preceptor that joins us using your code.

Aside from that, we offer special surprises and compensation adjustments for preceptors that take in a lot of students over time.

This is also another small thing that separates us from the competition: Becoming a preceptor with NPHub is becoming part of a community.

The NPHub Platform (our beloved app)

So, now that we have covered compensation and bonuses, it’s time to talk about the actual process of signing up.

We could argue that the main point of difference between NPHub and other preceptor matching services is our website. It’s 2021. If it’s not good, you’re not doing it right.

Through the years we’ve identified that our competitors tend to do one or more of these things:

#1 Have a prior interview process for the students (which takes more time).

#2 Have a system where preceptors have to manually send the offers to students (not necessarily ideal).

#3 They don’t really explain the process.

Our solution to these issues lies directly on the structure of our website. We have made it extremely intuitive and interactive, to the point of referring to it as an app.

It’s not just a big info dump, it’s a place where you can actually get things done as a preceptor.

Creating an account takes about two minutes. Other websites will give you these long, extended forms that almost seem like homework.

When you sign up as a preceptor, you get immediate access to the list of students, which includes key details about them that help you decide whether or not they might be a good fit for you.

This helps us eliminate issue #1.

On the other hand, you’ll appear on our interactive student map of available preceptors (or not, you can take your time to get ready before you’re displayed as available). The students are the ones who will send you requests that you can review at your leisure.

This solves issue #2. You’ll have to do a lot less to connect with students, because they will more often than not find you first!

You’ll also get to approve or reject their request easily after studying their profile. You can do that in a few clicks, and we’ll take care of the rest.

Issue #3 is something that we deal with in the Support Network section. See below.

What happens when you get a student request?

You’ll get a text and an email for you to approve the request or ignore it.

All you have to do is say “yes” or “no.”

Is it a yes? Awesome. The process after that will only take a few minutes. It’s automatic, we’ll take care of almost everything.

Is it a no? That’s okay. No pressure. Nobody will bother you about it.

You can get the other details of this process in the Paperwork and Support Network sections of this guide.

Your preceptor profile

Another thing that we should highlight is how your preceptor profile is actually set up.

Many of our competitors can’t even guarantee that you’ll have some sort of online preceptor profile where you can manage your information, requests, etcetera.

For them it might just be a list of preceptors with name, specialty, and phone number. You won’t be able to do anything about it. You’ll have no authority, no presence.

To be fair, we have seen it’s not always like that, and to those competitors who actually take the time and resources to set something up, we celebrate you. Really.

In our case, our preceptor profile acts as a hub where you can see and interact with your:

  • Personal information
  • Documentation
  • Rotation information
  • Licensing
  • Compensation

And more.

We will also provide you with a preceptor code that you can share with students so they can check out your profile, see if you’re available, etc.

By the way, we take privacy very seriously, so don’t worry. Students are not able to search you by name after you sign up. They can only look at preceptor codes.

Paperwork

So, what happens when you decide to precept a student? Well, just like any other preceptor, you gotta do some paperwork.

But you might be thinking: “Didn’t you just say I wouldn’t have to do any “homework”? What’s the deal?

Our motto about paperwork is simple:

“We do it. You barely see it.”

This also applies to students, and the results are just incredible.

Research indicates that our competitors might send paperwork to preceptors directly, which is not… bad? But does leave a lot of room for improvement.

Since preceptors are already extremely busy in their day-to-day, our main concern is to make the process of taking students as seamless as possible.

“Seamless” is a very interesting word. It means “having no awkward transitions, interruptions, or indications of disparity.”

So, our way of providing a seamless process is to do all of this stuff for you. Whatever we send you it’s already done. You just have to sign off on it and approve it.

Our process includes the option to do things like e-signing paperwork, which we can’t guarantee you’ll get somewhere else.

If you choose to go with one of our competitors, we can only hope you’ll never have to use a printer.

They way we are able to provide you with a seamless paperwork experience, which greatly saves you (and everybody else, including us) time and money, is by having a team of people with specific training.

These people will speed through a W9 form in like two minutes with zero mistakes. And that’s the whole point.

So, who are they?

Steps-to-become-a-preceptor

Our support network (we have some great humans on our team!)

When you sign up, we want to make the process easy for you. We want to put the tech-savvy twist on it so you have a great online experience.

NPHub has programmers, social media support… We have what it takes for you to handle rotations on your smartphone, on your day off, while sipping on a glass of your favorite drink if that’s what you want to.

Our primary team is made up of the same thing that our competitors offer. Direct, constant, and personal communication between you and NPHub.

For this, we have our Student Coordinators.

When you sign up, we’ll assign you a Student Coordinator that will be your guide for all things NPHub.

Student Coordinators are trained to handle situations that might arise during the rotation. They also answer your questions, find solutions, etcetera.

Before you sign up, you will talk to our Preceptor Recruiters, who will set everything up the way you’d prefer it to be set up.

You might get some friendly sales emails from us, but we can guarantee you this:

The moment you need to talk to a real person, you’ll never have to wait much.

That’s why NPHub works. Don’t have a smartphone? No time to create a profile? Don’t know how to do that?

It doesn’t matter. We’ll even do that for you. On one hand there’s technology, and on the other there’s people. We can’t do one without the other.

Why we’re doing this huge blog post

We always mention that our mission is simple: to bridge the gap between students and preceptors, and to help students find preceptors when all other options are spent.

Most of our students see NPHub as a last resort. We get that. In fact, we agree with that.

It shouldn’t be this way. It really shouldn’t. Universities should take accountability and help keep their students on the road to graduation with available preceptor options.

But that’s just not the reality right now.

This blog post is meant to be a resource for preceptors to understand why NPHub enhances the precepting experience, allowing them to maybe take on more students. Help more people.

We are always working to make the preceptor experience better.

A well-appreciated preceptor, who receives benefits from the extremely selfless work that they do, will be able to keep changing the world in a much better way.

That’s our belief! What do you think?
